Rebirthing Breathwork with Lyse LeBeau, Rebirther in Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Duart MacleanRebirthing is a natural and relaxing breathing process that makes use of the body's inherent ability to cleanse and heal itself. It is a form of conscious-connected-breathing, which results in mental, emotional and physical healing, as well as spiritual purification and deepened self-awareness. Alternatively, rebirthing has been called 'transformational breath', 'breathwork', 'holotropic breathwork', 'kriya yoga', or simply 'rebirth'.

Conscious breathing is as old a yoga, which is at least 5000 years. At the heart of yoga practice lies various forms of breathing exercises known as pranayama or breath control. Prana (vital or life force) circulates in the body, influencing mental and physical health, as well as the quality of our consciousness. If the circulation of life force is blocked due to stress or injury, illness can result. If our life force is weak, we lose our ability to concentrate. We will feel fatigued and lack energy. If it is disturbed, our minds and emotions become disturbed.

Breath is the connecting link between the life force and the body-mind. If we stop breathing for even a few minutes, the body's connection with the life force is broken and death results. Rebirthing, which is also termed kriya pranayama, strengthens this vital connection. By opening and relaxing into the breath we are opening and relaxing into life. Since breath is the bridge between the visible and the invisible worlds, release of our outer breath opens the door to our divine personal power. As we recognise this power we erase useless victim mentalities.

Although rebirthing is a gentle process, its effects are far reaching. The rebirthing process releases blocks to self-acceptance, self-expression and self-confidence. It increases our personal power and therefore our capacity for creating joy and success in our life. Rebirthing supports us in taking personal responsibility for our life, which in turn generates greater self-esteem and compassion for others.

The effects of this transformational breath process can be indentified on at least four levels: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Physically, rebirthing reduces stress and releases pain that may be held in the body. Mentally, it helps us become conscious of beliefs and patterns in our unconscious, which are preventing us from manifesting what we desire. Emotionally, this breathwork allows us to release and integrate what we have suppressed. Spiritually, rebirthing awakens our intuitive powers and our awareness of our essential innocence. In other words, we become fully conscious -- conscious thinkers, conscious feelers, conscious breathers, and conscious participants in our own life experience.

Essential to rebirthing is the idea that thought is creative. We shape the events and circumstances of our life through our thoughts, both conscious and unconscious. Rebirthing provides the opening through which to observe and change early pre-verbal thoughts that negatively colour life experiences. Fresh choice becomes possible when unconscious conditioning is released; feelings are felt more easily, answers from our intuitive side flow spontaneously and life holds a heightened experience of safety and pleasure. Combining the use of energy, affirmations and acceptance, rebirthing supports us in being true to ourselves. With strengthened self-esteem, we feel empowered, lighter, more alive and more deeply trusting in life and the universe. We become happier, healthier and more prosperous.

The rebirthing method brings us deep relaxation, inner clarity, emotional stability, an expanded sense of well being and greater ability to concentrate. Problems that have been plaguing us for years often dissolve or simply disappear. We notice negative patterns of self-sabotage beginning to unravel and new possibilities for a creative and happier life opening up. Those who commit to a series of rebirthing sessions usually report better relationships and an overall increase in their physical and mental health, as well as greater success in their projects. Feelings of depression, even suicidal thoughts, will give way to a more positve, affirmative view of life. Taking back their inborn power to shape their own lives, many find the burden of living transformed into the joy of living.

Rebirthers are well trained and experienced in the transformational breath process. The rebirther is an anchor who provides a safe environment and acts as a breathing guide. Conscious-connected-breathing is easily learned and enjoyed by people of all ages from all walks of life. We recommend at least ten sessions. Each session lasts as long as the energy cycle requires, which is typically one to two hours.
